About this tour
Did you know that Riga Central Market is one of the largest markets in Eastern Europe? In this tour you will see the historic and mighty hangars where aircraft- zeppelins once where kept and now it’s used as a market. In it’s hundred year long history market has experienced a lot and we will introduce you with it!

Local people are selling and buying goods here in their daily life and it will be hard to find another place where so many fresh vegetables and fruits are sold right from the local farms.

This tour will introduce you with one of the most remarkable places in Riga- Riga’s Central Market- place where people shop, meet, talk and spend their daily time.

After shopping and getting to know the market, we will go to the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia, to learn about the local history and traditions which have been preserved here for hundreds of years. Speaking about traditions- together (it always tastes better if you have put your effort into it) we will prepare traditional meal in traditional way from the products we have bought in the market by using smudge and old-time style cooking tools.

Have you ever tasted Latvia’s national dish – Gray peas with bacon? Or maybe you've heard something about Latvian braised cabbage with pork. You have a chance to try it now. At first we will visit one of the biggest markets in eastern Europe- Riga Central Market. Construction was started in the June, 1924, but finished in the fall of 1930. In 1924 large-scale works started but the plans did not fit in appropriated funds. The council couldn’t find funds after discussions and construction was stopped in 1926 and resumed just in two years. You can get closer to Latvian culture and traditions in the Central Market. Merchants will offer typical and unique products here – you will met food used here for a long time as well as new flavors of Latvia.

At the end of the day we will have a meal prepared together from products bought in the market and everyone will take a part in the cooking process because it always tastes better if you have put your effort into it.

"A walk through the Market"

With no tours already scheduled for the days my Mother and I planned on being in Riga I emailed to see if we could do a private tour. We walked though the market with the guys explaining some of the history of the buildings and the evolution of the markets to its present day. They also answered all of our questions and curiosities about the area and population of Riga.

After we finished at the market we took local transportation out to the open are museum and while my mother and I strolled through the houses and barns the goods we gathered at the market were set up for a picnic lunch. We both took part in the preparation and had wonderful conversations learning even more about the area and people.

Despite it starting to rain as we walked back to the bus, it was an excellent day. Our guides even gave us recommendation for dinner and walked from the bus stop back through town to show us the restaurants location to make it easier when we came back for dinner. The guys were absolutely wonderful and the trip was non generic and gave a bigger glimpse in to the city than we would have gotten on any of the big hustled tour buses. I wish we'd had more time I would have tried to do everyone of their offered tours and highly recommend it to anyone that wants a professional, friendly, well organized and fun tour.
