About this tour

Old Town

During medieval times, Riga was a mighty harbour and was a member city of the Hanseatic League which joined the traders of the Baltic Region and North Germany. The Large and the Small Guild, as well as the reconstructed House of the Blackheads recall the Hanseatic times.

These were built by the Guilds of craftsmen and artists buildings in a growing city. Old Riga is a masterpiece of architecture which has retained the atmosphere of old times.

Art Nouveau

Forty per cent of buildings in the centre of Riga belong to art nouveau, which is more than in other European cities. Moreover, art and architecture connoisseurs believe that it is in Riga that art nouveau found especially powerful and sweeping expression. In order to preserve Old Riga, Riga’s wooden buildings and the art nouveau architecture, the historical centre of Riga has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The areas where art nouveau features most lavishly are Alberta Street and the so-called embassy district nearby - you will see this and even more with us.

Our guide Margli was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We enjoyed our walking tour with her and highly recommend a Rihards tour. Rihards was very prompt with answers to any queries.
